This 8.7 mile section of the Appalachian Trail is the last section of the AT in Georgia for north bound hikers or the start of Georgia for south bound hikers.  This section of trail follows the Tennessee Valley Divide.  One shelter and a couple of campsites are available for thru hikers on this section of trail.  The end of this section is at the North Carolina state line near Bly Gap.

This section begins as the trail crosses US 76 at Dicks Creek Gap. There is a parking area for about fifteen cars where the trail crosses the highway. The GPS coordinates are N34 54.733 W83 37.130 for those who have a GPS device in their vehicle. At 1.1 miles you'll find a campsite. At 1.8 miles the trail crosses Cowart Gap. At 3.4 miles the AT crosses Bull Gap. At 4.5 miles the trail reaches Plumorchard Gap. There is a side trail on the right that leads 0.2 miles to Plumorchard Gap Shelter. This large shelter was built in 1993 and sleeps 14 with a privy nearby. The trail reaches As Knob at 5.3 miles. At 5.8 miles the trail crosses Blue Ridge Gap. At 6.8 miles the trail reaches a campsite and then reaches Rocky Knob at 7.1 miles. At 8.7 miles the trail reaches the North Carolina state line near Bly Gap and the end of this section. North bound hikers still have nearly 2110 miles to go to Katahdin.

If your planning a thru hike of the AT you should check out the following books to help plan your hike, Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers' Companion (2017) and Appalachian Trail Data Book (2017). We also suggest checking out Appalachian Trail Guide to North Carolina-Georgia and Appalachian Trail, Springer Mountain to Davenport Gap (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map) to help plan your Appalachian Trail adventure.
