This 15.4 mile section features Fontana Dam and the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  At 480 feet, Fontana Dam is the highest dam in the eastern United States.  The Appalachian Trail crosses directly over the dam.

This section begins in Stecoah Gap, where the trail crosses NC 143.  Parking is available for about seven cars where the trail meets NC 143.  The GPS coordinates are N35 21.503 W83 43.071 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.

At 1.0 miles the trail reaches 3238 foot Sweetwater Gap.  At 2.3 reach a short side trail that leads to the Brown Fork Gap Shelter.  This shelter was built in 1996 and sleeps six with a privy nearby.  At 2.6 miles the trail reaches 3546 foot Brown Fork Gap.

At 5.3 miles the trail reaches 3615 foot Cody Gap, where there is a campsite nearby.  At 7.5 miles the AT travels through a parking area in 2949 foot Yellow Creek Gap and crosses Yellow Creek Mountain Road at 7.5 miles.  The GPS coordinates for the parking area is N35 24.617 W83 45.936 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.

Cable Gap Shelter

The trail reaches Cable Gap Shelter at 8.4 miles.  The orginal shelter was built in 1939 by the CCC.  The shelter was renovated in 1988 and sleeps six with a privy nearby.  At 9.8 miles the trail reaches 3401 foot Black Gum Gap.

At 11.2 miles reach Walker Gap and the junction of the Yellow Creek Trail.  This trail heads 2.5 miles to Fontana Village and is used as an alternate when the AT over Fontana Dam is closed.  This trail is poorly marked (2007) and can be tough to follow.  At 11.4 miles there is a campsite near the trail.

At 13.7 miles the trail crosses NC 28.  At 14.7 miles reach the Dam Road and a side trail that leads to the Fontana Shelter.  This shelter is sometimes referred to as the Fontana Hilton.  The shelter was built in 1982 and sleeps 24.  This spacious shelter has a restroom and water.  There are showers located at the Fontana Dam Visitor Center.

The AT heads across Fontana Dam along the access road

The AT follows the road to the visitor center, reached at 15.2 miles and on to the top of the dam at 15.4 miles.  This marks the end of this section of the Appalachian Trail.  The AT will now enter Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The next road crossing of the AT is in 41 miles at Newfound Gap.

There is a good size parking area located at the Fontana Dam Visitor Center.  The GPS coordinates are N35 27.113 W83 48.086 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.
