The section of the Appalachian Trail continues to follow the ridgeline of Kittatinny Mountain.  The route of the trail is mostly wooded, however there are many good views from along the ridge.  The trail is mostly level with the occasional short, steep sections.  This section has a side trail worth exploring; the Buttermilk Falls Trail leads two miles, sometimes rather steeply, to a beautiful waterfall. We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT.  We have some info and maps of this section of trail below.

This section of trail begins as the trail follows for about 100 feet and then crosses Blue Mountain Lakes Road, heading north bound.  Soon there is a trail register.  At 1.3 miles the trail passes by a swampy area and crosses a gravel road at 1.5 miles.  After a short steep climb you'll cross another dirt road.  In a few hundred feet the trail joins with a dirt road.  A blue blazed side trail on the right leads 150 feet to a view of Crater Lake. The trail will pass numerous dirt roads, so be sure your following the white blazes closely!  The trail makes several short, steep up and downs.  At 2.8 miles you'll reach the junction for the blue blazed Buttermilk Falls Trail that leads about two miles steeply to the beautiful waterfalls.

At 4.6 miles reach a rock outcrop of the 1492 feet summit of Rattlesnake Mountain, with nice views to your left.  At 6.8 miles reach dirt Brink Road.  The Brink Road Shelter is located a short distance along the road.  Turn left and follow the blue blazes to reach the shelter.  The shelter was originally built in 1970, with a larger shelter being built in 2013.  There is a privy and water is located 300 feet on the right of the shelter. At 9.5 miles begin the sometimes steep descent toward US 206 and Culvers Gap.  At 10.2 miles reach US 206 and the end of this section.
