Part of this short 4.6 mile section of the Appalachian Trail skirts the northern part of Sterling Forest State Park. Two park trails, the Allis Trail and Sapphire Trail meet the AT giving hikers an opportunity to explore the park. This section of the AT also features Little Dam Lake and a steep, rocky section of trail near NY 17 known as Agony Grind. The trail drops over 600 feet in elevation in just 0.4 miles.
We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT. We have some info and a map of this section of trail below.

The trail crosses busy NY 17 and follows Arden Valley Road over the NY Thruway on a bridge.
