This 160+ mile section of the Appalachian Trail covers the trail in Shenandoah National Park, northern Virginia and the few miles of trail that wanders into West Virginia at Harpers Ferry.  The trail in Shenandoah National Park has many vistas to enjoy and the section in northern Virginia includes the notorious roller coaster, a strenuous portion of the trail. 

Most thru hikers stop at the ATC Headquarters located just a short distance off the main trail in Harpers Ferry and sign the trail register as well as have their picture taken.  The 104 miles of trail that is located in Shenandoah National Park is a great section of trail for beginner backpackers.  The trail is well graded and well maintained, as well as the numerous spectacular views.  Re-supply is easy and the trail is never too far from the park road, Skyline Drive.  There are some good climbs and descents along the trail in the park as well as the notorious roller coaster in northern Virginia.
