This 20.7 mile section of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania features the devastation of the Palmerton EPA Superfund Site as well as the views from Weathering Knob, Hahn's Lookout and Lookout Rock. This section of the AT also features the famous climb out of Lehigh Gap. There is only one shelter during this stretch of the Appalachian Trail. This section is also known for its dried up springs, so be sure you carry enough water. The section of trail takes the AT from Lehigh Gap to Wind Gap.

The Leroy A. Smith Shelter was built 1972, sleeps 8 and has a composting privy. There is suppose to be reliable water, the first is a spring 0.2 miles along a blue blazed trail from the shelter. A second spring is located on a yellow blazed trail another 0.2 miles further from the shelter and a third spring that is even further that is suppose to be running when the other two are dry.

This section begins where the trail crosses the Lehigh River on the PA 873 bridge in Lehigh Gap. Turn right and at 0.3 miles the trail crosses busy PA 248. The Lehigh Gap East Parking Area is located on an old railroad bed just east of the PA 248 traffic light. The GPS coordinates of the parking area is N40 47.008 W75 36.265. At 0.4 miles the white blazed AT turns at sign. The blue blazed Winter Trail continues along the old railroad bed and is an easier route or should we say a less difficult route, although longer route out of Lehigh Gap (+0.5 miles). The AT climbs steeply out of the gap.

Watch closely for white blazes on the rocks as you climb, literally up a steep rockslide of Blue Mountain. You will be exposed in bad weather as you climb the 1000+ foot elevation gain out of Lehigh Gap. At 1.2 miles reach the shoulder of Blue Mountain with spectacular views. At 1.4 miles reach the junction of the blue blazed Winter Trail. At 2.0 miles reach the edge of an old road with views to the left.

At 3.2 miles the AT bears right off a grassy lane and ascends stairs. At 4.1 miles the trail travels under power lines. At 5.2 miles there is a kiosk and trail register. At 5.3 miles cross Blue Mountain Road in Little Gap. There is a State Game Lands Parking Area located 0.1 miles south of the trail. The GPS coordinates are N40 48.366 W75 32.089 for the parking area. The AT crosses a bog before climbing a steep rocky slope.

At 5.6 miles the trail reaches Weathering Knob. There are views to the north. The short hike to Weathering Knob is one of our Best of the AT in Pennsylvania. At 8.6 miles there is a blue blazed trail on the right that travels 0.1 miles to an overlook. At 9.0 miles cross under a power line. At 9.6 miles there is a blue blazed trail that goes 0.6 miles to a spring. At 10.1 miles reach the junction of the blue blazed Delps Trail on your right. The Delps Trail travels steeply 0.4 miles to an unreliable spring and 0.8 miles to a State Game Lands Parking Area.

At 12.5 miles the trail crosses Smith Gap Road. There is very limited parking at this crossing. The GPS coordinates of the crossing is N40 49.528 W75 24.864. At 16.0 miles reach a blue blazed trail called the Katellen Trail on the right that travels 0.2 miles to the Leroy Smith Shelter. At 16.2 miles cross under power lines. At 19.6 miles reach Hahn's Lookout on your right. At 19.9 miles reach Lookout Rock on your left. The one mile hike from Wind Gap to Lookout Rock/Hahn's Lookout is one of our Best of the AT in Pennsylvania.

From here the trail descends rather quickly with the use of switchbacks. At 20.4 miles pass under power lines. At 20.7 miles the trail reaches a busy road at the PA 33 bridge. Follow road under bridge and cross busy road at the AT parking area. Beware of the fast moving traffic. The GPS coordinates for the parking area is N40 51.645 W75 17.554. We have videos below that feature Lehigh Gap, Weathering Knob and hiking from Wind Gap to Lookout Rock/Hahn's Lookout.
