Allegheny National Forest features 517,000 acres located in the northwestern region of Pennsylvania.  There are nearly 300 miles of hiking trails to explore including 97 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail that travels through the national forest. Allegheny National Forest is four hours away from the Syracuse, NY area. The national forest is divided up by recreational areas that include campgrounds. Look below for more information on this great place to create a hiking adventure.

Three very popular short hikes to a view:

Rim Rock - A short trail leads to a spectacular view of Allegheny Reservoir.

Jakes Rocks - A loop trail leads to a couple of views of Allegheny Reservoir.

Tidioute Overlook - A loop trail leads to a view of the Allegheny River and of the small town of Tidioute.

Below are the different recreation areas of Allegheny National Forest:

Willow Bay - A popular campground on the Allegheny Reservoir. The North Country Trail travels near the campground.

Tracy Ridge - A large campground and trail system makes this area popular with hikers.

Red Bridge - A popular campground with boaters and fisherman. The North Country Trail travels near the campground.

Kiasutha - A popular campground on the Allegheny Reservoir off the Longhouse National Scenic By-Way.

Dew Drop - A popular campground on the Allegheny Reservoir off the Longhouse National Scenic By-Way.

Kinzua Beach - A popular swimming area and picnic area on the Allegheny Reservoir.

Buckaloons - A campground along the Allegheny River that includes a loop trail.

Hearts Content - A campground and scenic area featuring an old growth forest featuring trees over 300 years old.

Willow Creek - A wilderness area that features a popular a hiking loop trail.

Minister Creek - A small campground and very popular hiking destination.

Morrison - A popular backpacking remote campground and hiking loop trail.

Timberdoodle Flats - A short interpretive trail for the family.

Beaver Meadows - A scenic area with popular hiking trails.  The campground is currently closed (2013).

Loleta - A scenic day use area and campground with a three mile hiking loop trail.

Little Drummer - A historic pathway located in the southeastern region of the national forest that features Cole Run Pond.

Laurel Mill - This recreational area features 10.7 miles of trails.

Brush Hollow - Features over ten miles of trails.

Twin Lakes - A popular campground with hiking trails.

Tionesta National Scenic Area - Another old growth forest in a remote area of Allegheny National Forest.

Kinzua Dam - A couple of short trails feature the impressive Kinzua Dam built in 1965.

Here are long distance hiking trails in Allegheny National Forest:

North Country National Scenic Trail - This national scenic trail travels 97 miles through the national forest.

Tanbark Trail - This trail travels over 25 miles from US 62 to the North Country Trail near Hearts Content Scenic Area.

Twin Lakes Trail - This trail travels nearly 16 miles from the Twin Lakes Recreational Area to the North Country Trail in the Tionesta National Scenic Area.
