Hiking in Adirondack Park Ferris Lake Wild Forest Powley-Piseco Road Brayhouse Gore
|
An old road filled with history leads hikers west from Powley-Piseco Road, 0.2 miles south of the bridge over Brayhouse Brook to a strip of land called the Brayhouse Gore. The old road follows the border of Fulton and Hamilton Counties.
Two different land surveys in 1768 and 1794 established two different points for the western end of a boundary line that separated property. In 1883, Verplank Colvin determined the correct boundary adding acreage to state holdings. The area was called Brayhouse Gore and a road was suppose to be built there. It was found by Verplank that the Gore is a high plateau in Hamilton County.
The only problem was the road your walking on was built before Verplank determined the correct boundary. The road was built on disputed private land. The road only skirts the Gore to the south and no paths are located in the Brayhouse Gore area which includes Dead Horse and West Creek Mountains.
The old road that leads toward Brayhouse Gore
The start of the old road is located on private property. There probably will be a chain across the road. Follow the old road and in 0.2 miles you'll enter state land. The old road climbs to a private cabin at 1.7 miles. The area called Brayhouse Gore is to your right/north. Nothing really to see, it's just an area rich in history from bungled survey's and a road built in the wrong place. From the cabin you may notice the trace of the road continuing on toward the Fulton County line and went on to Punkhole. There really isn't much more to explore ahead and parts of the area are private. To return simply retrace your steps.
