Dunning Lean To is located near the northwestern shore of Eighth Lake in the Fulton Chain Wild Forest of the Adirondacks. It is reached via a canoe carry trail and is easily reached by hiking only 0.4 miles from a large parking area along NY 28 near Raquette Lake. The canoe carry trail connects Eighth Lake with Browns Tract Inlet.

Most drivers normally pass right by the parking area located on NY 28 exactly 2.3 miles north from the Eighth Lake Campground and 2.3 miles south from the four corners in Raquette Lake. It has a small sign 'Canoe Carry' sign that is nearly impossible to see from the road. The GPS coordinates are N43 47.796 W74 41.706 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.

From the parking area you'll see an opening in the woods near where the Canoe Carry sign in located. This is where the access to the canoe carry trail is. Turning left is the trail that leads 0.4 miles to Dunning Lean To and the western shore of Eighth Lake. There is a trail register almost immediately. The trail is marked with canoe carry markers and snowmobile markers. It is a leisurely walk on a wide path to the lake that can be enjoyed by all.

There is an abandoned snowmobile trail that starts behind the lean to that travels 2.5 miles to the Uncas Trail, near Bug Lake. From the parking area, if you turn right on the canoe carry trail, it is 0.7 miles to a wooden boardwalk that leads to Browns Tract Inlet. Just prior to the boardwalk, a snowmobile trail turns left and leads to the old bed of the Raquette Lake Railroad, which is also listed on maps as Dillon Road.  Look below for pictures and a trail map.
