Hiking in Catskill Park
Delaware Wild Forest
Huggins Lake is located in the Delaware Wild Forest of the western area of Catskill Park. An old dirt road takes hikers 1.8 miles from the small parking area to a pretty little lake. There are primitive campsites located near the shores of the lake. Guide books state that this path is not maintained. The old road looked to be in good shape when we visited in the summer of 2015, with only one deadfall blocking the road.
Directions: From Downsville, take NY 30 north and turn right on Berry Brook Road. Drive 4.5 miles and the short dirt road that leads to the small parking area will be on your left. There is a DEC sign at the side of the road. Follow the short dirt road up the hill to a small grassy parking area. The GPS coordinates of the parking area is N42 00.946 W74 50.617.
There is a kiosk in the parking area. The start of the trail to Huggins Lake begins just past the yellow stop gate. There is a trail register located just past the gate. The first 1.2 miles is a steady climb before it levels out for a bit. At 1.5 miles the trail begins to descend as it travels toward the lake with a moderate descent as you get closer to the lake.
The dam for the lake is to your right, along the grassy path. An old overgrown road continues over the dam and around the eastern side of the lake, where you'll find a few primitive campsites. There is another old overgrown road that travels along the western side of Huggins Hollow Brook. To find more information on this hike, check out the hiking guide Catskill Trails from the Adirondack Mountain Club.
The NY-NJ Trail Conference has a great Catskill Trails Map Set that we recommend in planning your Catskill hiking adventure! We also recommend the National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map for the Catskills. Look below for a few maps, picture and a video featuring a hike to Huggins Lake. This is a great hike for those folks who are camping at Beaverkill State Campground.
