Wild Forest

The 47,350 acre Jessup River Wild Forest area is bounded by NY 28 to the north and NY 30 in the southeast, as well as three wilderness areas: West Canada Lakes Wilderness to the west; Siamese Ponds Wilderness to the east, and Silver Lake Wilderness to the south. The state lands in Jessup River Wild Forest border, or are in close proximity to, the communities of Indian Lake, Piseco, Speculator and Wells. NY 30 bisects Jessup River Wild Forest and is the main access to the area.

The 3899 foot Snowy Mountain is the highest peak in Jessup River Wild Forest as well as in Hamilton County. Baldface and Pillsbury Mountains also provide summit views accessible by marked foot trails. Some rock outcrops offer fine views from Porter, Oxbow, and Fish Mountains along with Watch Hill. Baldface Mountain Trail requires a boat trip across Indian Lake, however the DEC has discussed creating a trail that doesn't require a boat trip.

Many people enjoy hiking to the fire towers on Pillsbury and Snowy Mountains, which are the two most popular destinations in Jessup River Wild Forest. The Snowy Mountain trailhead is easily accessed from NY 30, while the Pillsbury Mountain trailhead is located on seasonal dirt roads that can be gated at times.  The short 0.5 mile hike to Fawn Lake near Speculator is a little known gem.

Camping is popular at Lewey Lake State CampgroundMoffitt Beach State Campground, located near Speculator, is also a very popular destination.  Primitive camping is available at sites near Mason Lake directly off Perkins Clearing Road. Those looking for private sites accessible only by boat will enjoy Indian Lake Islands State Campground.

Currently there are no lean to's in Jessup River Wild Forest, however the DEC has plans that include the construction of three shelters in the future. Two will be near the Northville-Placid Trail along Fall Creek and at Fall Lake. The Northville-Placid Trail will be rerouted off road in Piseco in the near future. The other shelter will be at Fawn Lake.

The future North Country National Scenic Trail will cross into Jessup River Wild Forest from West Canada Lakes Wilderness near the Miami River, go across NY 30 at the Mason Lake parking area, cross the Jessup River and make its way toward the end of Elm Lake Road to enter Siamese Ponds Wilderness.
