Labrador Hollow

The 1483 acre Labrador Hollow Unique Area is located between the towns of Tully, Apulia, and Truxton on the borders of Onondaga and Cortland County. It is a scenic area well known for its hiking trails, scenic pond and fishing. Labrador Hollow is truly a phenomenally unique area; from a magnificent waterfall, to a beautiful boardwalk nature trail, to a picturesque pond and to a spectacular vista on Jones Hill.

Labrador Hollow includes a nature trail featuring a boardwalk that is nearly 2000 feet in length that transitions between various ecological zones, from a woodlot on dry land, through a pine and hemlock swamp, into marshlands and out toward open water. Accessible benches are located along the boardwalk. From the boardwalk parking area, turn left on Labrador Cross Road and left again at the next intersection and about ½ mile south down the road on the left there is a spacious accessible fishing pier on the western shore. There is an accessible rustic toilet building.

The Tinker Falls Trail was rebuilt in 2008 to make it more accessible. The trail was widened and benches were placed along the 1/4 mile trail. This trail, reached via NY 91, twists through the peaceful woods alongside Tinkers Falls Stream. Eventually, you reach where Tinker Falls, a spectacular waterfall, can be seen in its full glory. In 2014 there was more trail construction allowing hikers better access to behind the falls and then up to the top of the waterfall. There is also handicapped parking at that start of the trail.  Look below for more information on these trails.

There are a number of regulations the NY DEC has in place for this area. Please check out out the NY DEC website to find out more.

Hiking Trails

Through a partnership with the Finger Lakes Trail Conference and the Onondaga Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club, there are a number of well-marked hiking trails that are quite popular located in Labrador Hollow Unique Area.

A section of the North Country National Scenic Trail travels through the area. This 4600+ mile hiking trail will travel from North Dakota to Crown Point, NY when it is completed. The stretch that travels in this area is also known as the Onondaga Trail.  It is marked by blue blazes and is a very popular backpacking trail in the area. While there is no camping allowed in Labrador Hollow Unique Area, you'll find many camping spots along the trail in nearby Morgan Hill State Forest including the Hemlock Lean To.

The Nature Trail features a boardwalk that travels secretly through the tall brush of the wetland, occasionally bringing visitors to a place where the view of the pond, surrounded by towering emerald green mountains, is truly stunning.  A short accessible trail takes you to the scenic Tinker Falls.

The Skyline Trail, which when completed, will link Labrador Hollow with Morgan Hill State Forest as well as Kettlebail State Forest and Heiberg Memorial Forest to the West. This trail is marked with orange blazes. The Skyline Trail reaches the North Country Trail about 0.2 miles north of the top of Tinker Falls.

Some suggested hikes:

Hike #1 - Labrador Hollow Nature Trail (0.5 miles). A scenic walk along a boardwalk to views of Labrador Pond.

Hike #2 - Tinker Falls Trail (0.5 mile, round trip). A scenic walk to a beautiful fifty foot waterfall.

Hike #3 - Jones Hill via Spruce Pond (3 mile round trip). Talk a hike on the North Country National Scenic Trail to a spectacular view.

Hike #4 - Jones Hill via Tinker Falls (2.2 mile round trip). A shorter, but steeper hike to the view is via the hang glider service road.

Directions:

From Tully, take NY 80 east to NY 91 south, Labrador Hollow Unique Area may be accessed from Labrador Cross Road as well as Markham Hollow Road. There is a sign on the right side of NY 91 indicating the unique area. Parking for Tinkers Falls is available from NY 91, across from the trail entrance. There is an overflow parking area about 300 feet further south along NY 91. Please do not park along NY 91. If the parking lot is full then we recommend exploring one of the many other hikes located in this area.
