Hiking in Wayne County
Northern Montezuma WMA
This short, easy 1.25 mile loop hike located in Northern Montezuma WMA takes you through a mature wooded wetland then follows the top of a dike between Crusoe Creek and a pond amidst a wetland. Itís mostly open to the sun, so be prepared with water, sun lotion. Since this is a wetland, bug spray is always a good idea. Bring your binoculars - this is a prime bird watching area.
The trail is a wide mowed path, however day we visited, the path had not been mowed and the path was almost impossible to follow. It looked like the parking area had been recently mowed, but not the hiking path. The map below is an estimated path.
Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area is part of the nearly 36,000 acre Montezuma Wetlands Complex, which includes the federally-owned Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, state owned Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area (including the former Howlands Island WMA), land owned by conservation groups (including Montezuma Audubon Center), and private property.
Directions: From NY 31 in Savannah, head north on NY 89. Turn right onto Savannah Spring Lake Road and watch left in 0.6 mile for the parking area.
Sign at the parking area for the Malone's Creekside Trail.
