A parking area off NY 3 & 30 between Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake serves hikers wishing to hike to Ampersand Mountain as well as Middle Saranac Lake.  On many days you'll find this parking area over flowing with vehicles with many cars parked along both sides of the road.  Most of the vehicles are certainly for the spectacular views from Ampersand Mountain.  A few might be for the scenic shores of Middle Saranac Lake.

The sandy beach and picnic area is open for day use only as you'll see the signs marking that you can only camp at designated sites.  The short trail leaves the parking area heading north and immediately crosses a wet area that looks that most hikers have bypassed, creating a new herd path.

The remainder of the trail is easy to follow to the shores of the lake.  There is a sort of rickety pontoon type bridge that crosses over shallow water just prior to reaching the privy and picnic area.  There is nice sandy beach along the lake.  The round trip hike to the lake and back is just under 1.1 miles with a 20 foot elevation gain.  This easy hike can be enjoyed by all members of the family.

Look below for a couple of pictures, a video and a map of this hike.
