Hiking in Madison County
New York State Lands
Morrow Mountain State Forest features 1,290 acres of state land in the towns of Georgetown and Nelson in Madison County. Morrow Mountain rises to an elevation of 2,142 feet and is the highest elevation in Madison County. There is a truck trail that leads to the tree summit with radio towers. You can also hike up the 0.9 mile truck trail to the highest point in Madison County. There a some views through the trees.
At one time there was a 67 foot fire tower at the summit of Morrow Mountain and if you look closely you'll see remnants of the old base of the fire tower. We were unable to find the parking area and yellow loop trail on the DEC map below when we went to visit. We did ask the DEC about the trail and was told the trail does not exist. There are some views from Fire Tower Road of Morrow Mountain. See below for a topo map for the "summit" hike.
Directions to Morrow Mountain State Forest
The forest is located north of NY 80 and is easily assessed from Fire Tower, Parker Hill, Morrow and Mollie Roads. The start of the Morrow Mountain Summit Hike is located at the DEC sign off Fire Tower Road. Park here and simply ascend the truck trail 0.9 miles to the summit. The GPS coordinates of the start of the truck trail aka Forest Road is N42 49.302 W75 45.497 for those who have a GPS devise. There is only a 266 foot elevation change, so this is a pleasantly easy to moderate hike.
