State Bridge to Lock 21
This whole section of the North Country Trail follows the Old Erie Canal Towpath Trail. The NCT follows this trail all the way to Rome, NY. This section begins at the junction of NY 31 and NY 46. The trail veers right off NY 46 just north of the NY 31 crossing.
In 0.5 mile the trail passes the NY 46 rest area on the left with picnic tables. Soon the trail reaches Mill Road and crosses the road at an angle. Now the trail runs on the right side of the canal. Dunbarton Road comes in from your right and runs right next to the trail.
The trail crosses Germany Road and passes by Verona Park. There are picnic tables, a playground and grills located here. There is even a baseball field. Next the trail passes next to a home and then crosses Higginsville Road. You can hear the traffic from NY 46 from the other side of the canal. The trail crosses Collins Road and then arrives at Stacy Basin, crossing County Route 52 aka Senn Road.
The trail now reaches Lock Road. The trail ends here and begins a short road walk to the Erie Canal. Turn right, cross NY 46 and follow Lock Road, crossing the Erie Canal at Lock 21. This is the end of this 5.8mile section. It is fairly level hiking throughout this section.
The crossing of the Erie Canal is the actual lock! There are plans to build a camping area at Lock 21 for NCT thru hikers and Erie Canal boaters, to be completed by the fall of 2010.
