This 9.1 mile section of the North Country Trail features the rugged Rattlesnake Wildlife Management Area and a tough section of hiking on private property. Much of the trail on private property is CLOSED for hunting from May 1-31 and Oct 1 - Dec 22. There is no camping allowed in Rattlesnake WMA without a special permit from the NY DEC. There is a designated campsite on private property on a side trail at the end of this section. There are no other camping opportunities on this stretch of the trail. This section begins as the trail leaves Fox Hill Road. The next four miles is on PRIVATE PROPERTY. There is no camping allowed and please stay on the trail. At 3.75 miles the trail turns left after crossing one last gully, to follow an old logging road. The trail goes around a barn before reaching dirt Kennedy Road. Follow this dirt road to NY 70.

Turn right on NY 70 and follow the busy road for about 500 feet. The trail turns left off the road at a yellow Finger Lakes Trail sign. You are entering Rattlesnake Wildlife Management Area. The trail climbs steeply as you will gain nearly 700 feet in elevation in under one mile. There is NO CAMPING allowed in this WMA without a permit from the NY DEC. At 5.4 miles the trail reaches the highest point along the NCT in Rattlesnake WMA at 2032 feet. The trail skirts around a boggy pond before reaching dirt England Road at 6.1 miles.

At 6.6 miles you'll reach a metal gate and a large DEC parking area. From here it is all road walking to the small village of Swain. This section ends as the trail turns left on Mill Street from County Route 24. Look below for a detailed description and map of this section of the NCT.
