This is the mansion that was home to the courageous Revolutionary War hero, General Nicholas Herkimer. The mansion was completed around 1764.  General Herkimer died here in 1777 after being wounded in an ambush near Oriskany as he lead troops to help at Fort Stanwix.  This is a nice place for a picnic and to explore.

There is a stretch of the Erie Canal Trail that is on the grounds. There is also a walking trail that leads away from the backyard.  Be sure to check out the root cellar! Admission to the grounds is FREE, however to explore the mansion there is a minimal fee.

Check out the NY State Parks and the Friends of Herkimer websites for more information on this state park.
