The campground is located in the East-Central Adirondacks, off NY 74 near Ticonderoga. There are 72 campsites located at Putnam Pond Campground, with nine of the sites remote. One of the remote sites is located on an island.
You can find more information on Putnam Pond State Campground from the official NY DEC website. We liked the secluded feel when we have visited this campground as well as being able to go hiking straight from our campsite. There is one trailhead in the campground near sites 38 and 39 that leads to Heart Pond as well as Bear Pond. There is another trailhead near the boat launch with two trails, one that travels to Berrymill Pond and the other that leads to Grizzle Ocean then on to Pharaoh Lake. A popular long day hike is the Putnam Pond Loop.
Pharoah Lake Wilderness is located just off the main campground lands and there are numerous trails that leave the campground and lead into the heart of the wilderness. We recommend a hike to Treadway Mountain. It's a long 3.9 mile one way hike from Putnam Pond Campground with an elevation change of nearly 900 feet. Your rewarded with spectacular views from it's rocky summit. If you take a boat across Putnam Pond, your hike to the summit from the landing is only 2.3 miles one way. We also recommend a hike to Lost Pond. The parking area for the trailhead is located just outside the campground.
There are so many hiking trails in the vicinity of Putnam Pond, it'll be easy to plan a great hiking adventure that suits your needs; whether it's a short hike or an all day trek into Pharoah Lake Wilderness. You can also drive to Ticonderoga and check out Mount Defiance. The GPS coordinates to the entrance of the campground is N43 50.419 W73 34.017.
