Hiking in Cortland County
Cuyler Hill State Forest
Cuyler Hill Natural Area
A short 0.3 mile side trail off the main Finger Lakes Trail / North Country Trail in Cuyler Hill State Forest leads to secluded campsite next to a scenic stream in Rose Hollow. For those looking for a tranquil back country camping experience, here's a great spot without having to hike for many miles.
***When we last visited this pleasant spot in June 2010, we noticed it can be easy to keep going on the FLT/NCT and pass right by the orange blazed Rose Hollow Trail. Better signage is needed.
From the FLT/NCT crossing at seasonal dirt Randall Hill Road, it's a moderate 1.2 mile round trip hike to the Rose Hollow campsite and back. Be careful parking along the side of Randall Hill Road as there are many wet, muddy sections along the side of the road.
Your hike starts where the FLT/NCT crosses Randall Hill Rd. Follow the white blazes and ascend the road bank. There is a trail register almost immediately along the trail. The FLT/NCT is easy to follow as you gently ascend in this pine forest. The trail soon veers left and levels off.
At 0.3 miles you come to the junction of the orange blazed Rose Hollow Trail on your left. This junction can be easily missed, so keep your eyes out for the trail and an orange blaze on a tree. The Rose Hollow Trail immediately descends quickly from the FLT/NCT.
The trail winds and descends as you make your way into Rose Hollow. There are a few trees along the way with writing on them for a privy (didn't see it) among other things. The trail soon crosses a small stream and you arrive at the Rose Hollow campsite at 0.6 miles. There are tenting spots available.
A small fire ring and nice stone chairs await you. Take off your backpack, grab your water bottle plus a snack, then take a seat in the stone chair and enjoy your surroundings. A spot away from civilization without the long hike. Your only 0.6 miles away from your vehicle! Got marshmallows?
Look below from some pictures, a video and a trail map of this short, pleasant hike. The Rose Hollow Trail is part of the 900+ mile Finger Lakes Trail System.
Directions: From Truxton, NY take NY 13 North and turn right just past the "Cuyler" sign, then another right onto Linklaen Rd. Turn right on Cuyler Hill Rd and then left on Enzes Rd (Seasonal Dirt Road). Take Enzes Rd to the end and veer left onto Randall Hill Rd aka Linklaen Hill Rd (no signs).
In less than a half mile you will see where the Finger Lakes Trail/North Country Trail crosses the road. Carefully park on the shoulder here. GPS coordinates are N42 40.890 W75 54.680
