In the Catskills there are thirty-five peaks that are over 3,500 feet in elevation and are noted in the Catskill 3500 Club. The Catskill 67 are the next highest peaks in the Catskills, of which, 63 are over 3,000 feet in elevation. These peaks are featured in a hiking guide, The Catskill 67, a recommended book from the ADK Mountain Club. Roundtop, at 3440 feet, is the 41st highest point in the Catskills, or #6 for the Catskill 67.

There are three Roundtops in the Catskills. This is the one that is located in Bearpen Mountain State Forest, just north of the main Catskill Forest Preserve. To reach Roundtop requires a hike along old logging roads that are unmarked. The start of this hike is from parking area at the end of Ski Run Road. The GPS coordinates are N42 17.563 W74 28.078. From Prattsville take NY 23 west over the bridge over Schoharie Creek. Turn left after the bridge onto County Route 2. Drive 2.7 miles to the top of the hill. There is an unmarked dirt road on the right. This is Ski Run Road. Drive 1.1 miles to the parking area on the left side of the road.

From the parking area follow the old woods road 1.5 miles up to the ridgeline. Turn right on another old logging road on the ridgeline and travel just under 0.5 miles to the summit of Roundtop. There is a view just past the summit. Some hikers head back and travel the 2.1 miles to Bearpen Mountain, which is one of the Catskill 3500 Club mountains.

To get more detailed info on this hike and other Catskill 67 hikes, we recommend purchasing the hiking guide The Catskill 67. The book gives more info on the bushwhack routes and historical information. Look below for a topographic map of Roundtop to help assist in planning your adventure.
