In the Catskills there are thirty-five peaks that are over 3,500 feet in elevation and are noted in the Catskill 3500 Club. The Catskill 67 are the next highest peaks in the Catskills, of which, 63 are over 3,000 feet in elevation. These peaks are featured in a hiking guide, The Catskill 67, a recommended book from the ADK Mountain Club. Roundtop Mountain at 3440 feet is the 40th highest point in the Catskills, or #5 for the Catskill 67.

There are three Roundtops in the Catskills. This is the one that is located in Kaaterskill Wild Forest, next to Kaaterskill High Peak. To reach Roundtop Mountain requires a bushwhack from a snowmobile trail that circles both Roundtop Mountain and Kaaterskill High Peak. The best place to start your hike is from near the end of Gillespie Road. The GPS coordinates are N42 10.549 W74 07.154. The NYCDEP has purchased land in this area, giving a buffer to Kaaterskill Wild Forest. Gillespie Road is a dirt road that gets rougher as you get closer to the end. It may not be suitable for all vehicles.

From the parking area follow the old woods road and continue where the road turns left. Eventually the old road will reach the snowmobile trail that circles the two peaks. Cross the trail and begin your bushwhack toward the northwest ridge of Roundtop Mountain.

Roundtop Mountain is located in the Kaaterskill Wild Forest of the Catskill Forest Preserve. To get more detailed info on this hike and other Catskill 67 hikes, we recommend purchasing the hiking guide The Catskill 67. The book gives more info on the bushwhack routes and historical information.
