St Lawrence County is located in northern New York, on the border with Canada and along the St Lawrence River. Much of the southern half of the county is located in Adirondack Park. The county seat is Canton and the 2012 population was 112,232. The highest point in St Lawrence County is Mount Matumbla with an elevation of 2688 feet. Mount Matumbla is located in Adirondack Park along the border with Franklin County. The land was formerly owned by the International Paper Company, but the state recently bought a conservation easement on the land, giving it public recreation rights there.

With the 43 state forests located in the county plus the section of Adirondack Park that falls in the county, there are numerous places to hike and explore in St Lawrence County. There is free primitive campsites available within Brasher State Forest at Walter Pratt Memorial Park. Be sure to check out the 24 mile Rutland Trail that travels across the county following an old railroad bed. There are numerous state parks located in the county.

Waterfall lovers will find waterfalls in Grass River Wild Forest, along the Raquette River, Stone Valley, Greenwood Creek State Forest as well as other places. The most popular hikes in the county include Bear Mountain in Cranberry Lake Wild Forest, Mount Arab Fire Tower and Bog River Falls in Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest as well as the Cranberry 50. Those looking for a remote adventure should check out Five Ponds Wilderness in the Adirondacks.
