Last week we headed to the Thirteenth Lake trailhead to do a hike up Peaked Mountain, which features a section of the future North Country National Scenic Trail plus the future highest point along the whole length of the North Country Trail on the summit of Peaked Mountain.
I twisted my left ankle near the junction of the Hour Pond Path, but decided to try to continue. Finally with Peaked Mountain within sight and now my right knee also hurting, we made the fateful decision to turn around. I figured better to get back before sunset than taking a chance of spending a cold night in the wilderness. The trail as we neared Peaked Mountain Pond was very difficult to follow. I’m sure that a lot of work will be done on the trail when the future NCT is “blazed” or “DEC disc’d”. I did read that the DEC plans to move the summit trail from it’s current poor location.
