This six mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina features the spectacular views from the summit of 5216 foot Siler Bald. Some call the tremendous views from Siler Bald as one of the best in the area. From Wayah Crest Picnic Area to Siler Bald is a very popular day hike along the AT.
This section of the AT begins at Winding Stair Gap where the trail leaves US 64. The trail passes by a campsite at 0.9 miles and reaches 4100 foot Swinging Lick Gap at 1.2 miles. At 2.1 miles the trail passes 4383 foot Panther Gap. At 2.6 miles the trail travels near 4339 foot Big Stamp.
At 3.7 miles reach the blue blazed loop trail that leads 0.5 miles to Siler Bald Shelter. This shelter, built in 1958, sleeps eight and has a privy located nearby. Siler Bald is a large grassy area that affords 360 degree views. Relax, spend sometime exploring the bald and the spectacular views!

At 4.4 miles the AT hits a crest and begins the journey descending toward Wayah Gap, reaching the 4132 foot Wayah Gap at 6.0 miles and the end of this section of the AT. The AT crosses NC 1310 at Wayah Gap. There is parking available at Wayah Crest for about ten cars. Wayah Crest was a former campground that is now a picnic area and trailhead for Siler Bald. The GPS coordinates are N35 09.186 W83 34.858 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.
