For northbound hikers this is the start of the section of the AT in Shenandoah National Park.  This section begins in Rockfish Gap at the bridge over I-64 and the northern terminus of the Blue Ridge Parkway and brings AT hikers into Shenandoah National Park.  The AT in the park is a very popular stretch of trail that is used by many backpackers beside thru hikers.

The Appalachian Trail travels 104 miles in Shenandoah National Park.  The trail is well graded and has many spectacular views along the way.  The trail crosses Skyline Drive 28 times, has numerous waysides for re-supply and passes by all of the campgrounds in the park. 

Backcountry permits are required if you plan on camping in the park.  These permits are FREE to obtain.  Campfires are prohibited in the park, except at the commercial campgrounds and established fireplaces at shelters, huts and cabins.  Be sure to visit the National Park Service website for more information on backcountry camping in the park.

Hiking the AT in Shenandoah National Park

This section begins on the southern end of the bridge over I-64 in Rockfish Gap.  The AT follows a footway along the right (east) side of the bridge.  At 0.1 mile the trail follows the right side of Skyline Drive as you enter Shenandoah National Park.  You'll reach a concrete post and AT marker at 0.3 miles where the trail turns right off Skyline Drive then ascends steeply.  All trail junctions in Shenandoah National Park are marked with a concrete post with a metal strip with information.

At 0.8 miles, a side trail on the left leads 0.2 miles to the southern entrance station of the park.  Backpackers can obtain permits here.  At 1.2 miles the AT passes through a gate, then a second gate at 1.7 miles and in a few feet pass a trail heading west, then travel through a third gate.  Avoid a right fork at 1.9 miles and then avoid another right fork at a trail junction at 2.4 miles.

Bear Den Mountain

After skirting Scott Mountain, the trail starts to descend at 3.5 miles.  At 3.7 miles cross Skyline Drive in McCormick Gap at MP (milepost) 102.1 of the drive.  Ascend and soon your crossing an open ridge along Bear Den Mountain.  At 5.0 miles the trail reaches the open 2885 foot summit of Bear Den Mountain.  There are police radio installations on the summit as well as views.  The trail descends.

At 5.5 miles the trail crosses MP 99.5 of the Skyline Drive in Beagle Gap and then ascends Calf Mountain.  At 5.8 miles the trail skirts to the right of the 2910 foot summit of Little Calf Mountain.  At 6.4 miles the trail travels by the 2974 foot summit of Calf Mountain.

At 7.0 miles reach the junction of a blue blazed trail that leads 0.2 miles to a spring and at 0.3 miles reaches Calf Mountain Shelter.  This shelter was built in 1984, sleeps six and has a privy nearby.  At 7.4 miles pass under power lines and at 7.6 miles the trail passes a spring on the right.

At 8.0 miles the trail crosses Bucks Elbow Mountain Fire Road.  Skyline Drive is 0.1 mile to the west at MP 96.8 in Jarman Gap.  At 8.2 miles pass a spring on the right and in 300 feet cross Moormans River Fire Road.  The AT continues its descent along the west bank of South Fork of Moormans River.  At 8.4 miles the AT leaves the creek and ascends, then crosses diagonally over a grass covered pipeline area.

 At 9.3 miles the trail reaches the 2453 foot summit of an unnamed hill.  There is a view back towards Bucks Elbow Mountain.  As you descend there are views of Turk Mountain, Sawmill Ridge and the city of Waynesboro.  At 1.8 miles the AT crosses MP 95.3 of the Skyline Drive at the northern edge of the Sawmill Run Overlook.

At 11.2 miles reach the 2650 foot summit of a knob. In a few hundred feet reach the junction of the blue blazed Turk Mountain Trail on the left.  The trail leads 0.9 miles to the 2981 foot summit of Turk Mountain.  At 11.4 miles the AT crosses MP 94.1 of Skyline Drive at Turk Gap and ascends.  At 13.4 miles the trail reaches MP 92.4 of Skyline Drive and the end of this section of the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park.
