This 9.7 mile section of the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park features the views from Blackrock as well as the popular Riprap Area.  This section begins where the AT crosses Skyline Drive at MP 92.4 and descends.

At 0.3 miles the AT reaches the junction with the Wildcat Ridge Trail.  A 6.2 mile loop hike can be done utilizing the AT, Wildcat Ridge Trail and the Riprap Trail.  The AT continues along the western side of the ridge traveling through an area of rhododendron.

At 3.1 miles a graded side trail on the right leads 0.1 miles to the Riprap Parking Area at MP 90.0 of Skyline Drive.  At 3.4 miles reach the 2988 foot summit of a knob and the Riprap Trail comes in from the left.  The AT now descends toward MP 88.9 of Skyline Drive and crosses the road at 4.1 miles.  The trail now ascends a small knob.

At 4.8 miles the AT travels next to Skyline Drive briefly then climbs another knob and then descends steadily.  At 5.9 miles the AT crosses Moormans River Fire Road in Blackrock Gap and then meets Skyline Drive at MP 87.4, turning right following the road.  The AT follows Skyline Drive for about a quarter mile before crossing off the road on the left, following an old road for 0.2 miles.

At 6.6 miles the AT crosses to east of old road, then in another 100 feet reaches the junction of a side trail on the right.  This graded trail leads steeply 0.2 miles to Blackrock Hut.  The Hut is located in a deep ravine and is only available for AT long distance thru hikers.  The Blackrock Hut was built in 1941, sleeps six and has a privy nearby.

At 7.1 miles the trail reaches the junction with the Trayfoot Mountain Trail.  In 300 feet the AT begins to skirt Blackrock with excellent views.  At 7.6 miles a blue blazed trail on the right leads 750 feet to MP 84.7 of Skyline Drive and parking for several cars.

At 8.3 miles the AT crosses MP 84.3 of Skyline Drive and travels through the remains of an old apple orchard.  At 8.5 miles reach the junction of Jones Run Trail.  To the left leads to Jones Run Parking Area at MP 84.1 of Skyline Drive.  At 9.7 the AT reaches MP 82.9 of Skyline Drive in Browns Gap.  This marks the end of this section of the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park.
