Cascade Pond is a popular hiking destination in the Blue Ridge Wilderness of the Adirondacks located near the small hamlet of Blue Mountain Lake. There are three possible starting points to visit this remote scenic pond. There is a small waterfall at the outlet of the pond. A popular lean to is located near the shore of the pond.

The most popular starting point is off Durant Road aka County Route 19. There is a short DEC dirt road that leads to a few primitive campsites near the shore of Lake Durant (FREE CAMPING) and a place to launch small boats. There is a small parking area available. This starting point takes hikers over the floating bridge over Rock Pond and is about a 2.8 mile hike to Cascade Pond.

The two other starting points involve the overly popular Northville-Placid Trail and Lake Durant State Campground. One starting point is outside of the campground along NY 28/NY 30 and the other is within the campground (fee required unless camping at campground). It is a four mile hike to Cascade Pond from the NY 28/NY 30 trailhead and 3.5 miles from the campground trailhead. Look below for info on each of the possible hikes from the different starting points.

From the Durant Road trailhead: You are following red markers and almost immediately pass a trail register. At 0.6 miles cross Rock Pond on a floating bridge. The trail climbs a ridge after the bridge, then descends into a small valley, crossing a small stream. The trail climbs again after crossing the stream, sometimes steeply as you climb to a height of the land. At 2.1 miles the main red marked Cascade Pond turns left on an old road.

This old road travels toward Grassy Pond on the right. At 2.6 miles the trail passes the site of where the old lean to was situated. Soon reach the log bridge that crosses the outlet of Cascade Pond. There is a small waterfall located at the outlet. The trail can get confusing here. The trail works away from the pond. At 2.7 miles reach a side trail on the right that leads to the new lean to site.

From the NY 28/NY 30 - Lake Durant Campground trailheads: A marked trailhead is located where the Northville-Placid Trail crosses NY 28/NY 30. There is a parking area on both sides of the road. Follow the blue marked NPT north toward the campground. The trail enters the campground at 0.3 miles, crossing the Rock River and then following the main campground road along the shore of Lake Durant. At 0.5 miles the trail veers left off the road just after site #3 and heads back into the woods.

At 3.2 miles reach a major junction. The trail on the left leads to Stephens Pond along the Northville-Placid Trail. Turn right at this intersection on the red marked Cascade Pond Trail. After 0.8 miles of hiking, sometimes through some wet stretches, reach a side trail on the left that leads to the lean to. It's another 0.1 mile or so to the log bridge over Cascade Pond Outlet and the waterfall.

Some campground visitors hike to Stephens Pond and then to Cascade Pond as a long day hike. Look below for a trail map and directions to the trailheads.

Directions: (Rock Pond/Cascade Pond) Take NY 30 & NY28 out of Blue Mountain Lake toward Indian Lake. Turn left on Durant Road and within 0.2 miles turn left on a dirt road that leads to primitive campsites and a place to launch boats on Lake Durant. The trailhead is part way down the road with a small parking area on the left. The dirt road is not plowed in the winter. The GPS coordinates for this trailhead are N43 50.891 W74 25.439 for those who have a GPS devise.

NY28/NY 30 trail is located along NY 28/NY 30 at a marked parking area where the Northville-Placid Trail crosses the road, about three miles east of Blue Mountain Lake. The GPS coordinates are N43 50.520 W74 23.188 for those who have a GPS devise. The parking areas are plowed in the winter.

The last trailhead is located within the Lake Durant State Campground (fee) between site #3 and site #5. Parking is available in the main beach parking area. The GPS coordinates are N43 50.251 W74 23.242 where the trail leaves the campground road.
