Trail New York State Parks Old Erie Canal State Historic Park Canastota to Durhamville
|
This whole section of the North Country Trail follows the Old Erie Canal Towpath Trail. The NCT follows this trail all the way to Rome, NY. In the village of Canastota this section begins just east of NY 13 and just off Canal Street. There is a museum for the Erie Canal located west of NY 13 in Canastota.
The trail follows the towpath on the left next to the old Erie Canal and runs parallel to Canal Street. The trail passes a picnic table before veering left toward County Route 10, passing through a large parking area. There is an open area with benches prior to the parking area. This looks like it would be a good camping area for thru hikers (unsure of regulations here). The trail crosses County Route 10, follows it briefly north before turning right and picking up the trail that returns back to the old canal.
Soon the trail come close to Canal Street, crosses Cobb Street before joining Canal Street to cross the New York State Thruway (I-90) over the bridge. The trail veers right off the road, crosses NY 316 and then crosses Oneida Creek on a bridge before ending at NY 46.
The next part of the trail is a road walk along Canal Street in Durhamville north for the next 2.2 miles. The trail begins again just north of the junction with NY 31.
