Sugar Bay to Chappel Bay
Hemlock Run, Hammond Run
This 11.2 mile section of the North Country National Scenic Trail in Allegheny National Forest covers the trail from from Sugar Bay to Chappel Bay. The trail features Hammond Run and the very scenic Hemlock Run as well as the highest point of the NCT in Pennsylvania. The trail follows Hemlock Run all the way to Chappel Bay. There is an elevation gain of over 1300 feet on this section of the trail.
The trail leaves PA 321 and Sugar Bay, starting off traveling parallel to PA 321 before climbing Hammond Run. Thru hikers will be happy to find a campsite as the trail follows the scenic stream. The highest point of the North Country Trail in all of Pennsylvania at 2171 feet is just north of PA 59.

As you approach PA 59 there is an area of dense mountain laurel. There is parking available near where the trail crosses PA 59. You'll find level campsites and blueberries along the trail as the NCT makes its way toward Hemlock Run. The trail will descend next to Hemlock Run all the way to Chappel Bay. There is a great campsite near the water. The trail crosses Briggs Run and Coon Run before crossing under power lines to reach the end of this section at PA 321. Parking is available on PA 321 for about 12 cars.
