Located near the historic village of East Aurora, Knox Farm State Park is the former country estate of the Knox family.  The 633 acre property was graciously donated by the family to the state for everyone to enjoy and includes the former home as well as the farm buildings.  The property is mostly open grasslands with two ponds and some wetlands, however there are about 100 acres of woodlands.

The park has numerous unmarked hiking, jogging and biking trails.  The trails are used by snowshoers and cross country skiers in the winter.  You can view the Park Trail Map (pdf) from the NY State Parks website.  There are over six miles of trails to explore at Knox Farm State Park.

The Outer Loop Trail on the park map is the trail that follows the mowed path through the grasslands and at times along the edge of the field.  It does enter the woods briefly at one point.  Most of the unmarked trails on the map meander in the woods.  The jogging path follows paved service roads.  Be sure to print out a map prior to your visit, as none of the trails are marked and there are no signs at any of the trail junctions.  The trails are still very easy to follow.

We did a hike that featured some of the Outer Loop as well as some of the woodland unmarked trails when we visited on a nice late November day in 2010.  Our hike was a pleasant and easy 2.6 miles.  There was snow on the ground when we visited as this area is prone to lake effect snowfall from Lake Erie.  Look below for a map of our hike as well as pictures and a video.

The park is open year round from dawn to dusk.  There are flush toilets in the park Visitor Center, located near the main parking area within the farm buildings.  There are no fees to enter this state park.  The park is home to several species of farm animals including horses, sheep, goats, llamas and chickens.  The Visitor Center has exhibits of historic and natural interest.

From Buffalo take NY 400 to Jamison Road exit.  Turn right off exit and follow Jamison Road to the junction of NY 16 & NY 78.  Turn left and follow NY 16/78 for just over 3 miles to the park entrance on your right.  Here is info on directions from the NY State Parks website.

We did not see any signs to point you in the right direction to Knox Farm on any major highways.  The only sign we saw was the small sign at the entrance along a busy NY 16 / NY 78.  We were happy we had our GPS directing us to the park.  The GPS coordinates are N42 46.641 W78 38.407 for those we have a GPS devise for their vehicle.
