The Neversink River travels nearly 55 miles from the slopes of Slide Mountain to the Delaware River. While most of the river is on private property, there is a stretch that is on state lands. This includes a beautiful section in the Slide Mountain Wilderness that we explored and would like to share with those looking for a spot not in any guide book. This section includes small waterfalls, cascades and a pretty swimming hole.

Directions: From either Claryville or Big Indian, take County Route 47. If you are coming from Claryville, you will pass the sprawling Frost Valley YMCA. From Big Indian, you will pass both the overly popular Giant Ledge and Slide Mountain Trailheads. There are two small unmarked DEC parking area's on the same side as the river. The parking area closest to the Slide Mountain Trailhead has a path that leads to a primitive campsite. The GPS coordinates of this parking area is N41 59.782 W74 27.989. The other parking area is the one you want. The GPS coordinates are N41 59.482 W74 28.773 for this parking area.

From the parking area, follow the well worn path that travels 150-200 feet to a primitive campsite. From there take a herd path on the right that travels down toward the river. There are numerous paths that wind all through the area. You can hear the cascading river and you'll find numerous places to get down to the river. The river goes around a bend and enters a mossy area with numerous small cascades. A beautiful place to explore. You are only about 500 feet from your vehicle.

If you go onto the moss covered rocks by the river, just watch your step! The rocks can be slippery, although I had no problems with my hiking boots. Follow the river downstream to a final chute that travels into a large pool. This looks like it would be a wonderful place to cool off on a hot, summer day or after a hike to Giant Ledge. A great place to have lunch.

This is a great short hike for those folks who are hiking Giant Ledge or Slide Mountain.
