Appalachian Trail from
Pinnacles Picnic Grounds

This one mile one way hike along the Appalachian Trail from the Pinnacles Picnic Grounds is beautiful. There are numerous viewpoints that you'll pass along the hike. To access this great hike, park at the far end of the Pinnacles Picnic Grounds located at milepost 36.7 along the Skyline Drive. The CCC built this picnic area, including the large pavilion at the west end. This facility was first to be designated in the park back in 1939.

After parking walk toward the Appalachian Trail sign located near the restrooms. Turn left along the white blazed Appalachian Trail. The trail is mostly level along this stretch of the overly popular AT. Along the trail you'll find two separate overhanging cliffs rear up on the left. At about 0.9 miles from the start of your hike, you'll have a sharp right turn. Here there is a large flat rock that offers spectacular view southeast to Nicholson Hollow and Old Rag Mountain. You can turn around here to shorten your hike to a 1.8 mile round-trip or continue the last 0.1 miles to reach the Corbin Cabin Parking Area.

We recommend purchasing Shenandoah National Park (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map), Hiking Shenandoah National Park and Best Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park to help plan your adventure in Shenandoah National Park.
