Appalachian Trail from Jenkins Gap Parking Area

This 3.4 mile round trip hike along the Appalachian Trail is easy and pleasant anytime of the year.  Park your vehicle at the Jenkins Gap parking area located at milepost 12.3 of Skyline Drive.  The trailpost located at the south end of the parking area tells you that the Appalachian Trail is 150 feet away.  At the Y veer left and soon is the junction of the Appalachian Trail.

Turn left onto the Appalachian Trail and follow the white blazes.  Your hiking in a young hardwood forest in what once was grazing land and a large orchard.  There are some older trees, including apple trees that still have apples.  You may see some down trees and limbs from storms.

At the start of the hike the trail travels gently uphill along the ridge of an unnamed mountain.  There are views to the east of the valley in Rappahannock County.   Soon there are views to the west of Browntown Valley in Page County.  In June there's mountain laurel in bloom, in the fall, spectacular leaf colors and wildflowers all throughout the spring and summer along the trail.

Once you get to the Skyline Drive, simply turn around and retrace your steps.  For more information on hiking in Shenandoah National Park, check out these books and maps; Hiking Shenandoah National Park Shenandoah National Park - National Geographic MapsBest Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park Appalachian Trail Guide to Shenandoah National Park: With Side Trails, and 75 Hikes in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park.
