Mountain

Bearfence Mountain is a very popular hiking destination in Shenandoah National Park. You have the option of doing a true rock scramble or just hike to a view point without a rock scramble. Both feature hiking along a stretch of the famous Appalachian Trail. Either hike features spectacular views with the rock scramble offering 360 degree views. Sturdy shoes are recommended for this hiking adventure. Look below for info on each of the hiking options.

Hike Option #1 - Bearfence Rock Scramble

This moderate one mile loop hike has an elevation gain of 311 feet. This hike does include a true rock scramble, which means you will be pulling yourself up, between and over boulders using your hands and feet. From the Bearfence Mountain Parking Area, located at milepost 56.4, cross Skyline Drive and climb the stairs up the bank. At the trail post for the Appalachian Trail junction, continue straight on the Bearfence Mountain Loop Trail. Soon the rock scrambling will begin as well as the spectacular views. After the scrambling is over, you'll reach another trail post where you'll turn right onto a connector trail. Very quickly you'll reach another trail post for the junction of the Appalachian Trail. Turn right onto the AT north and at the next trail post, turn left to return to the parking area.

Hike Option #2 - Bearfence Viewpoint

This easy 1.1 mile round trip hike has an elevation gain of 305 feet. From the Bearfence Mountain Parking Area, located at milepost 56.4, cross Skyline Drive and climb the stairs up the bank. At the trail post for the Appalachian Trail junction, turn right onto the AT south. At the next trail post, turn left onto the connector trail. In a short time, turn right onto the Bearfence Loop Trail and follow the trail to the view point. When you are done enjoying the views, simply retrace your steps back to the parking area.
