Shenandoah National Park

Blackrock is one of the easiest hiking destinations in Shenandoah National Park with a 0.2 mile round-trip hike with an elevation gain of just 60 feet. The short climb is steep, but you are rewarded with a spectacular view that includes the entire 50 mile length of Massanutten Mountain. There are other Blackrocks in the park, this is the once in the Big Meadows Area of Shenandoah National Park. The Appalachian Trail travels just below Blackrock.

From Skyline Drive turn off at milepost 51.2 at the wayside for Big Meadows. Drive 0.9 miles on the access road to Big Meadows Lodge. Park at the far end of the parking area. There is a sign near the start of the trail. Bring a flashlight and watch the sun set, then look for the lights down in the valley below.  We recommend purchasing Shenandoah National Park (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map), Hiking Shenandoah National Park and Best Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park to help plan your adventure in Shenandoah National Park.
