Shenandoah National Park

Just a two mile round trip for this trip to Compton Peak and to a view point.  The trailhead is located at the Compton Gap parking area at milepost 10.4 of Skyline Drive.  This hike features a section of the famous Appalachian Trail.  The trail is rocky in certain spots, is not very difficult and has a spectacular view from a rocky ledge.

The trailpost at the parking area doesn't mention Compton Peak, but it is right above you.  From the parking area, cross Skyline Drive and follow the white blazes of the AT.  You are southbound on the AT.  You will be ascending gently into the woods.  There are a few switchbacks to help make the ascent of over 400 feet to the summit a bit more gentler.

At 0.8 miles you reach the summit with no views.  There is a trailpost to let you know the elevation and a crossing of trails.  Turn right and in 0.2 miles, after climbing over as well as around rocks, you'll reach the view point.  The views stretch east and west, over the Piedmont as well as Shenandoah Valley.  To your right is a view of Skyline Drive and Carson Mountain.

Simply retrace your steps to your car.  For more information on hiking in Shenandoah National Park, check out these books and maps; Hiking Shenandoah National Park Shenandoah National Park - National Geographic MapsBest Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park Appalachian Trail Guide to Shenandoah National Park: With Side Trails, and 75 Hikes in Virginia's Shenandoah National Park.
