Millers Head

This 1.6 mile round trip hike to Millers Head is one of the most popular destinations in the park. This hike has an elevation gain of 450 feet. The trailhead is located near the southern entrance of Skyland at milepost 42.5 along Skyline Drive. There is a nearly 360 degree view from the observation platform. The trail is sometimes steep and often rocky but you'll forget all about that once you see the views.

To find the trailhead, pass the stables after turning into the southern entrance of Skyland. Now take the left paved road at the fork. Park on grass along the paved road and walk the 175 feet to the trailhead sign. After starting the hike you'll pass a trail post. After passing a shack with a microwave antenna you'll reach a viewpoint from Bushytop, after just 0.2 miles of hiking. Bushytop is also a popular destination for those who do not want to make the trip all the way to Millers Head.

Continuing on the blue blazed trail you'll pass another trail post. It is another 0.6 miles downhill to reach the observation platform at Millers Head. There are some view points along the way before you reach the main view at Millers Head. Just remember that you will be climbing on your return trip to the trailhead. We recommend purchasing Shenandoah National Park (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map), Hiking Shenandoah National Park and Best Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park to help plan your adventure in Shenandoah National Park.
