Canyon Falls

This 4.6 mile round trip hike features the 86 foot Upper Whiteoak Canyon Falls. There is an elevation 1040 feet for this moderate difficult hike that starts from the Whiteoak Canyon Parking Area off milepost 42.6 from Skyline Drive. This is Shenandoah National Parks second highest waterfall and is a popular hiking destination. Just remember that you will be hiking steeply back to the parking area for nearly your whole return trip.

From the large parking area follow the well used trail as you gently walk downhill for the first mile. After crossing a small stream you'll cross the Limberlost Trail. Soon after that the trail crosses the Old Rag Fire Road and then the Limberlost Trail again. The trail will soon be descending quickly as you follow Whiteoak Run. At about 2.2 miles reach a trail post, where you'll turn left and cross the stream on a bridge. About 0.1 miles after you pass a horse trail on your left, you'll see two rocky ledges. It is from here where you'll get the best views of the waterfall. Retrace your tracks to return.

There are five other waterfalls further down, however this will make your difficult hike into a very strenuous hike as you'll need to climb all the way back up to the parking area on Skyline Drive. Some people park at the Whiteoak Park Boundary parking area and walk up to the falls or even do the strenuous Cedar Run Loop that features all of the falls. For more information on those hikes we suggest purchasing Shenandoah National Park (National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map), Hiking Shenandoah National Park and Best Easy Day Hikes Shenandoah National Park to help plan your adventure in Shenandoah National Park.
