Second Pond is a rather large pond located in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness of the central Adirondacks. The trail follows a nice grade to the shore of the pond. There is a campsite located near the pond. The pond is popular for anglers and day hikers looking for a short adventure. Look below for more information on this nice day hike to Second Pond.

Directions: The trailhead is located off NY 8 on Chatiemac Road. You'll find Chatiemac Road, about 1.5 miles north of the small hamlet of Bakers Mills. This dirt road will have you climbing as you'll gain over 700 feet of elevation over 2.3 miles as you make your way to the small parking area. There is a DEC sign that marks the trailhead at the parking area, located just before you reach the private property of the Chatiemac Club. The GPS coordinates of the parking area is N43 38.703 W74 02.582.

The trail is marked with yellow DEC markers and the trail is easily distinguishable from the parking area. The trail heads in a northerly direction. After only 500 feet of walking you'll see a small pond on your left and soon after you'll cross a brook at the pond outlet. The trail climbs gently on a nice grade and you reach the high point of the trail at 1.1 miles. The trail swings west as you walk along the northern slope of Height of Land Mountain.

The trail now descends mostly as you make your way toward the pond. The trail turns more northerly again as one final descent brings to to the shore of Second Pond at 2.7 miles. There is a campsite located away from the shore. There are herd paths that follow the shore in both directions probably made by anglers looking for the best fishing spot. There is no reason you can't follow the paths to enjoy this nice pond even more.

For more information on this hike we suggest purchasing the Adirondack Central Trails Map Pack from the Adirondack Mountain Club. This is a great tool for planning your hiking adventure in the central Adirondacks. Look below for a map of this hike of this hike. There is an overall elevation gain of nearly 400 feet for this easy to moderate hike in the Central Adirondacks. This is could be a great short overnight backpacking trip.
