Hiking in Steuben County New York State Lands South Bradford
|
South Bradford State Forest is located eight miles southeast of Bath, near the hamlet of South Bradford, in the town of Bradford in Steuben County and the town of Orange in Schuyler County.
Recreational opportunities on this state forest focus on rustic experiences with a limited amount of development. The Finger Lakes Trail / North Country Trail provides good access to the interior of the forest. There is a very attractive lean-to located along the Finger Lakes/North Country Trail in the southwest portion of the forest called Moss Hill Lean-To.
Moss Hill Lean To in South Bradford State Forest
The lean to is near where the northern terminus of the Great Eastern Trail is located, making a junction with the Finger Lakes Trail here coinciding with America's longest single footpath, the 4600 mile North Country National Scenic Trail.
In summer 2008, the Great Eastern Trail (GET) extended from the PA/NY border through Pinnacle State Park into the attractive Village of Addison, where the north end for now passes beautiful Greek Revival and Victorian homes in Addison's Maple Street Historic District. Recently an off road section of the GET was completed through Meads Creek State Forest and South Bradford State Forest to it's northern terminus at the FLT/NCT junction.
Directions
To gain access to this state forest from Bath, take NY 415 heading south. In the village of Savona turn onto NY 226, heading north. In the hamlet of Sonora turn onto County Route 18, heading east. At the four corners in the center of the hamlet of South Bradford, continue nearly straight ahead onto Dennis Road, which gives access to the center of the forest.
