AT in New York
State Line to
For northbound AT thru hikers this is the first major section of the Appalachian Trail in New York. After passing the painted state line on the rock the trail travels on at the junction of the State Line Trail, the AT travels along the ridge of Bellvale Mountain for 5.4 miles before reaching NY 17A. There is parking near the NY 17A trail crossing.
There is also parking along NY 210 at the trailhead for the State Line Trail. You can try the State Line Trail/Ernest Walter Trail/A.T. Loop, 4.1 mile, moderate to strenuous hike from the NY-NJ Trail Conference. We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT. We have some info and a map of this section of trail below.
Heading north along the AT from the NY/NJ State Line follow the white blazes into New York. The blue blazed State Line Trail leaves this point on your right, descending toward NY 210 and Greenwood Lake. At 0.4 miles reach Prospect Rock, which is the highest point of the AT in New York State at 1433 feet. Here, as well as other points along the ridge give hikers views of Greenwood Lake to the east.
At 2.5 miles reach a vista and the junction of the blue blazed Village Vista Trail on your right. The Village Vista Trail travels east and descends toward Greenwood Lake. The trail ends at a softball field, called Lion's Field, which can be seen from the vista above. A water fountain on the outside of the little green building can be used by hikers. Thru hikers can find groceries, restaurants, lodging and the Greenwood Lake Post Office (zip 10925) from this side trail.
At 5.4 miles reach the very busy NY 17A and the end of this section. Greenwood Lake is two miles to the right (east), Bellvale is 1.6 miles to the left (west) and the larger town of Warwick is 4.6 miles west. The Bellvale Creamery has ice cream and water, just 0.2 miles to the west of the trail crossing. There is parking available for eight cars at this trail crossing. The GPS coordinates for the parking area is N41 14.647 W74 17.198 for those who have a GPS devise for their vehicle.
