AT in New York
US 9 to
S Highland Rd
Denning Hill, Canopus Hill,
The Appalachian Trail truly gives hikers a little bit of everything, from spectacular views to walking past wild horses in Virginia, through cow pastures in Pennsylvania, to crossing a roaring river by canoe ferry in Maine to traveling past a monastery in New York. A walk near the Graymoor Monastery is one of the features of this section of the AT, if not the whole AT.
Since its inception in 1898, reconciliation and healing through atonement — the unity of men and women with God and with one another — has been the mission of the Friars’ work and ministries to people of every race, religion, and walk of life. The Friars have graciously allowed hikers to camp at the monastery ball field picnic shelter, which has a cold shower available during the summer and a privy.
We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT. We have some info and a map of this section of trail below.
This section of the AT (heading north bound) starts as the trail crosses US 9 at the junction of NY 403. At 0.15 miles cross the Old Highland Turnpike and at 0.5 miles cross a paved road that leads to the Monastery as well as the ball field where hikers can camp. At 0.6 miles cross Old West Point Road. The trail continues to descend briefly before starting to climb 300 feet to an elevation of 798 feet on Little Fort Hill, reached at 1.3 miles. The trail descends for a bit before climbing again to a view point on Denning Hill. The trail skirts the summit, reaching an elevation of 894 feet before descending again.
At 3.2 miles the trail crosses Old Albany-Post Road. At 3.8 miles the trail steeply climbs to the 831 foot summit of Canopus Hill with some views. From here the trail drops nearly 450 feet in elevation and crosses Canopus Hill Road at 4.7 miles. The trail reaches the end of this section at South Highland Road. There is a small parking area located here for two cars. The GPS coordinates for the parking area is N41 23.978 W73 52.607 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.
