AT in New York
NY 52 to
Depot Hill, Mt Egbert
A short section of the Appalachian Trail travels through the 260 acre Depot Hill Multiple Use Area. This section of trail features Depot Hill, Mount Egbert and the Morgan Stewart Shelter. The trail crosses I-84 along Mountain Top Road during this section.
The Morgan Stewart Shelter was built in 1984, sleeps six and has a privy. Water is available from a well with a pump located downhill from the shelter. We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT. We have some info and a map of this section of trail below.
This section of the Appalachian Trail begins as the trail crosses NY 52. The highway has two lanes of traffic for the lanes heading uphill and one lane for downhill, so your crossing three lanes of traffic. There is parking for about five cars available near the trail crossing. The GPS coordinates are N41 32.476 W73 43.955 for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle. At 0.4 miles cross a small stream. At 1.0 mile turn left on Stormville Mountain Road and follow road. At 1.1 miles turn left on Mountain Top Road, soon crossing over I-84. At T intersection, the AT goes straight into the woods at 1.3 miles. At 3.3 miles reach the 1329 foot summit of Mount Egbert. A short while later reach the Morgan Stewart Shelter.
The trail now travels on Depot Hill, crossing Depot Hill Road at 4.4 miles. At 5.1 miles the trail begins a long descent toward NY 55. At 6.2 miles cross railroad tracks, then cross old route 55. At 6.5 miles reach NY 55 and the end of this section of the Appalachian Trail. We've heard that if you see a school bus parked near the trail crossing, it's actually a deli/hot dog stand.
