Fahnestock State Park
This section of the Appalachian Trail features the southern part of Clarence Fahnestock State Park. There are no shelters along the trail in this section of the AT, however thru hikers can easily access the state park campground via NY 301 at the northern end. We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT. We have some info and a map of this section of trail below.
This section of the AT begins as the trail crosses South Highland Road. The trail climbs to a high point at 0.2 miles. At 0.5 miles, after a descent, the trail climbs steeply past a wet area at 0.8 miles. The trail skirts more wetland as it meanders to cross Dennytown Road at 2.3 miles. A large open area where the trail crosses easily accommodates twenty cars for parking. The GPS coordinates for the parking area is N41 25.234 W73 52.123 for those who have a GPS devise in there vehicle.
After skirting more wetland and crossing a small stream, the trail climbs to the highest point along this section at 1042 feet after 3.2 miles of hiking from South Highland Road. At 3.9 miles the trail crosses Sunken Mine Road, crossing a small outlet at 4.0 miles. The trail now meanders before reaching NY 301 at 6.0 miles. There is parking for about eight cars at this trail crossing. The GPS coordinates for the parking at the NY 301 crossing is N41 27.157 W73 50.280 for those who have a GPS devise in there vehicle.
The Appalachian Trail briefly follows the Catfish Loop Trail and crosses other park trails in Fahnestock State Park. For more information on the park trails check out the Park Trail Map. Check out the NY State Parks website for more information on this park as well as camping here. A free tenting area with hot showers is available for thru hikers. Inquire at the park entrance.
