AT in New York
Bridge to US 9
A hike to Anthony's Nose is one of the most popular hikes, not only in New York, but in the whole USA. The journey to Anthony's Nose takes thru hikers off the main AT onto the scenic Camp Smith Trail. This section of the AT takes hikers over the Hudson River and travels through Hudson Highlands State Park.
This section of the AT does not have a shelter, however there is a well established campsite about one mile north of the Camp Smith Trail junction. This campsite, known as the Hemlock Springs Campsite is located near Copper Mine Brook about 0.2 miles from South Mountain Pass Road. The main feature of this section is Anthony's Nose and the Hudson River.
We suggest buying a copy of the Appalachian Trail Guide to New York-New Jersey for anyone planning a hike on this section of the AT. We have some info and a map of this section of trail below.
This section of the AT starts as you cross the Bear Mountain Bridge. The bridge was built in 1923-24 by a company run by the Harriman family at a cost of $5 million. At 0.5 miles turn left on NY 9D, following the road until veering right into the woods at 0.8 miles (el 258 feet). The trail now climbs quickly and reaches the junction with the Camp Smith Trail at 1.4 miles (el 766 feet).
A right turn here on the Camp Smith Trail will take you to the very popular Anthony's Nose in 0.6 miles. The AT continues straight and reaches the Hemlock Springs Campsite at 2.3 miles. Turn right and follow South Mountain Pass Road briefly at 2.5 miles. The trail turns left off the road and climbs Canada Hill. The trail has a steep section at 2.8 miles. Reach the southern junction with the popular Osborne Loop Trail at 3.8 miles. The northern junction is reached at 4.8 miles near White Rock. This is where the AT veers right and begins a descent toward NY 403 as well as US 9 near the Graymoor Monastery. This is the end of this section of the AT.
