Hiking in Adirondack Park
Shaker Mountain Wild Forest
The old lean-to on the south shore of Chase Lake was removed, and a lean-to was constructed on the lake's north shore in 2010. The site of the old lean-to is now a designated tent site. Chase Lake is a very popular hiking destination located in the Shaker Mountain Wild Forest of the southwestern Adirondacks. The main trail to the lean to is marked with red DEC markers. The trail to the tent site is marked with yellow DEC markers. It is a 2.7 mile one way hike to the lean to. It is 2.5 miles one way to the tent site.
Directions: From Caroga Lake Campground take NY 29A north. Soon after the intersection with NY 10, turn right on County Route 112 aka Benson Bleeker Road. Soon the roads becomes County Route 125. Turn left on Pinnacle Road and drive to the end of the road, where there is a large turn around/parking area. The GPS coordinates are N43 12.332 W74 23.398 for the end of the road for those who have a GPS devise in their vehicle.
From the large turn around/parking area, follow the red marked trail off to the right of the parking area into the woods. The kiosk/trail register is located at the start of the Pinnacle Valley Trail, which heads to County Line Lake. If you sign the register, be sure you head back to the right trail! After about 0.5 miles the trail follows close to the wild forest boundary and a private club property line. Just after one mile mile of hiking the trail turns away from the private club property line and begins to follow an old woods road. At 1.7 miles reach the junction of the yellow marked Chase Lake Tent Site Trail on your right. This trail travels 0.8 miles to the site of the old lean to location, which is now a designated tent site located near the southern shore of Chase Lake. The main trail leaves the old woods road at the junction.
Continuing on the main red marked Chase Lake Lean To Trail, reach Mud Lake Stream at 2.0 miles. This can be a tricky stream crossing during times of high water, especially during spring thaw or after heavy rains. The trail reaches the lean to at 2.7 miles. Look below for a couple of pictures, a map of this area as well as the map that is located at the trailhead kiosk. The new lean to is a much better site to camp (in our opinion) compared to the old lean to site/designated tent site. There is a nice view of the lake from the new lean to.
