Hiking in Cayuga County Waterfalls in Western & Central NY Great Gully
|
Located southwest of Auburn is the "Great Gully of Cayuga County" near the eastern shores of Cayuga Lake. Within the gully you'll find a few small waterfalls including a nine foot waterfall near the parking area and the 13 foot Great Gully Falls after a short creek walk. There are no signs or trail markers for you to find your way at the Great Gully, except for the stream.
From the unmarked parking area off NY 90 take the well worn dirt path/old dirt road toward the creek and the first waterfall. This nine foot waterfall looks like it might be a popular destination for the locals. To find Great Gully Falls you'll need to take the well defined dirt lane on the left that you may have seen before reaching the first falls. After climbing toward the top of the falls, descend into the creek. It is a 0.6 mile walk to Great Gully Falls, which includes going in and out of the creek. On the way you'll pass a small 3 foot cascade at a bend, which will mark you halfway point.
Directions: From Auburn, take NY 34 south out of the city. In the village of Fleming bear right on NY 34B south. Drive 3.7 miles and then turn right on Great Gully Road aka County Route 89. In four miles you'll reach NY 90. Turn left on NY 90 and in 0.3 miles turn left on an unmarked dirt lane with a small unmarked marking area. The GPS coordinates for the parking area is N42 48.485 W76 42.082 for those who have a GPS devise.
You can find more information on this waterfall as well as many other waterfalls in the book New York Waterfalls: A Guide for Hikers & Photographers.
