Hiking in Cortland County
Heiberg Memorial Forest
This 3.75 mile loop hike is in Heiberg Memorial Forest near Tully, NY. This hike utilizes the old woods roads located in this forest.
The Hike: From the parking area, head past the yellow gate and follow the old logging road up the small hill. The road will veer to the right, with a trail heading to the left. Veer right. At the next junction, turn right (the road to the left goes to Pond 1). The road will turn sharply toward the left. You know will come to another junction with a yellow gate. Continue straight through the yellow gate. The road now comes to a "Y" intersection, stay straight (veer left) as the other road heads right. You will see an abandoned house on your left. At the house follow the road to the left. At the next junction, turn right. You will now head through a Spruce forest. Turn right at the next junction, you will began to gently go downhill and the road turns to the left.
As you come out of the forest you will see 3 yellow gates. You will need to go past the one that says "Edwards" on it (on the left). Before you get to it, on your left under a tree is a picnic table. A nice place for a break. The area by the yellow gates is another trailhead parking area. You will head on this dirt road (actually called Edwards Rd) until you see a four way junction (about 0.3 mile). This four way junction can be hard to see in the summer, as it is a major junction for a snowmobile trail. Turn left up the trail (old logging road).
Follow this old road and you will be once again in a pine forest. Your are now on "Truxton Hill". There will be a junction on your left. Continue straight and begin a long gradual decent. Look to your right for some views between the trees. Another old logging road comes in again on your left, but continue straight. Now your decent becomes more pronounce (look to your right for views).
At the bottom of the hill you will come to an abandoned road that has started to become more of a creek bed. Turn left and begin your accent up hill. This is the toughest part of the hike. At the top of the hill you will see one of the yellow gates you passed through on your left. Turn right here. At the next junction turn left (straight is Pond 1). Veer left where you meet the trail that goes straight. You will start heading down hill and you will see the first yellow gate you passed and your parked vehicle.
Directions: From Tully, NY 80 East past traffic light in village. Next right on Railroad St, then left and quick right over railroad tracks. Stay on this road up the hill. You will see a sign on the left for "Heiberg Forest". Turn right here on Maple Ridge. The trailhead is the first parking area on your left about 1 1/2 miles down the road. You will see a yellow gate just east of the parking area.
