Hiking in Cortland County

There are many great hiking destinations in Cortland County. There is a section of the Finger Lakes Trail / North Country National Scenic Trail that travels through the county. Cortland County has numerous State Forests located within the county giving visitors many recreational and camping opportunities.
The county population is roughly 48,000 in the 2008 census and the county seat is located in Cortland. There are a couple of trails that utilize old railroad beds with the Jim Shug Trail and the Ridgeway Trail. There is also a trail located in Lime Hollow Nature Center that utilizes a section of the old Lehigh Valley Railroad. You can see traces of the old Lehigh Valley Railroad as you travel NY 13 between Truxton and Cuyler.
The highest point in Cortland County is Virgil Mountain at 2132 feet. The Finger Lakes Trail / North Country National Scenic Trail travels by the high point on its journey through the county.
